Based on the team’ academic background, early achievements of the scientific research, the Wu Culture Research Institute mainly focuses on the Wu area, especially centering Wuxi, to research the spiritual connotation, characteristics and performance of Wu culture, combining with the historical accumulation and the realistic need. It also inquires the significance of Wu culture to promote Wuxi local culture construction and

Wuxi city status. The research institute is divided into two groups of Wu literature and academic research and Wu language and folklore studies.

There are rich contents in Wu Literature and academic research, mainly including the works of all kinds of poets left in Wu area, especially the works created in the age of Ming and Qing, the modern poetry, novels and Zaju, and the various art research such as Xi opera and Pingtan that are full of the rich Jiangnan style and have an important position in the whole country.

Some achievements have a great influence in the whole country, especially which were did after the southern movement of Song Dynasty. For instance, the thought of "Su Lake Method to teach" for Reform proposed by Hu Yuan, the Mindonglin school, the Ming and Qing sound scholarship and the Changzhou school in Qing Dynasty, the modern westernization thought, the thought to save the nation with practical and industrial businesses, and the study of southern Jiangsu academic History, as well as the studies on historical and cultural celebrities’ academic ideas in different age, such as Xu Xiake, Gu Yuxiu, Qian Mu, Qian jibo, Qian Zhongshu, Qian WeiChang Xu Beihong, and Liu Bannong. Studies on Wu's language and Wu’s folklore mainly focuses on the rich cultural details of Wu, including local words of Wu, songs of Wu, Wuxi family, Wuxi Education, Wuxi Industrial and commercial culture, Wuxi Huishan Culture, Wuxi ancestral Temple group, and other kinds of folk life customs.
